Muddy Buddies 6 Ways

Muddy Buddies (aka Reindeer Chow or Puppy Chow) 6 Ways

Funfetti Muddy Buddies

I started making Muddy Buddies last year around Christmastime.  They are really simple to make, but it is one of those things that I can only allow in the house once or twice a year because they’re addictive and very fattening.  I’m going to give a basic ratio for them, and you can put endless twists on them.  The ones pictured to the right are Funfetti Muddy Buddies.  I made these for Beau’s first birthday party because they’re so cute and festive.  And kids love anything with rainbow sprinkles.  Everyone really liked the Funfetti Muddy Buddies, but I personally liked the Chocolate Cinnamon Muddy Buddies I made last Christmas more…until I made the Chocolate M&Ms Muddy Buddies this Christmas!   But like I said, get the ratios and learn the method, and you can make these with any flavorings you want.  I added a few more flavor ideas, but the combinations are only limited by your imagination.  These recipes can be doubled easily, too.

Basic Ratios:

  • 4 ½ cups Chex: I like Corn Chex the best, but you can use any variety.
  • 8 ounces of melting candy or chocolate: You can use chocolate chips, dark chocolate, almond bark, or even Wilton Candy Melts if you want bold colors
  • 1 ½ cups of the dry flavors: You can use Funfetti Cake Mix, dry brownie mix, any dry boxed baking mix, or powdered sugar.  You can also use powdered sugar mixed with cocoa powder or cinnamon (about 8:1 ratio).
  • 2/3 Cup Optional Add-Ins: Of course for the Funfetti Muddy Buddies, I used rainbow nonpareil sprinkles.  You can use peanuts, M&M’s, candy corn, really anything that goes with the theme of your treats.  For the Chocolate Cinnamon Muddy Buddies, I didn’t use add-ins.  For the add-ins:  if you’re using round (non-pareil) sprinkles like the ones in the Funfetti Muddy Buddies, add that to the plastic bag with the powdered sugar or baking mix.  If you are using M&M’s, candy corn, dried fruit, or any big sprinkles (Jimmy’s or the Christmas tree sprinkles in the first photo), don’t mix those in until you already combined everything else in the plastic bag.  It won’t look pretty if the M&M’s, etc are half-covered in melted chocolate and powdered sugar.

Funfetti Muddy Buddies

4 ½ cups Corn Chex

1 ½ cups Funfetti cake mix

2/3 cup rainbow nonpareil sprinkles

8 ounces vanilla almond bark

Chocolate Cinnamon Muddy Buddies

4 ½ cups Corn Chex

1 1/3 cup powdered sugar

2 tablespoons cocoa powder

2 teaspoons cinnamon

8 ounces white chocolate chips

Dark Chocolate Cranberry Muddy Buddies

4 ½ cups Corn Chex

1 1/3 cup powdered sugar

3 tablespoons cocoa powder

2/3 cup dried cranberries

8 ounces semisweet chocolate chips

Brownie Batter Christmas M&M Muddy Buddies (aka Reindeer Chow)

4 ½ cups Corn Chex

1 1/2 cups boxed brownie mix

2/3 cup M&Ms (use seasonal colors during the holidays for something special)

1/3 cup seasonal sprinkles

8 ounces milk chocolate chips

Halloween Muddy Buddies

4 ½ cups Corn Chex

1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

2/3 cup candy corn

8 ounces Wilton orange candy melts

Pumpkin Pie Spice Muddy Buddies

4 ½ cups Corn Chex

1 1/3 cups powdered sugar

2 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice

8 ounces butterscotch chips

Basic Method

  1. Add Corn Chex to a large mixing bowl. Add the dry mixes and any non-pareil sprinkles to a gallon sized storage bag.
  2. In a separate microwave-safe bowl add the melting chocolate (or bark or chips). Microwave in 30 second increments.  Watch it very closely.  You do not want to heat it too long or else it will get chunky, and there’s nothing you can do to fix that.  It will be done before it looks done!
  3. Remove the melted candy and stir with a rubber spatula to smooth it. Now pour it over the Chex and fold the candy and Chex together continuously until it’s completely coated.  Work quickly, but don’t be aggressive or you’ll break the cereal.
  4. Now use the rubber spatula to dump the coated Chex into the gallon bag. Seal the bag tightly, and turn bag each direction (sideways, upside down, left, right) very gently over and over again until the cereal is totally coated with the dry mixes and add-ins.
  5. Let it set for about 30 minutes.  Now add in any additional stuff:  candy corn, M&M’s, big sprinkles, dried cranberries, etcetera.
  6. Store in a cool, dry place for about a week.

    1. I know right…
The chocolate cinnamon ones were the first ones I ever made! They were my favorite, but my family likes the ones with brownie mix
